A complete overview of customs procedures
Customs operations represent the set of administrative and fiscal formalities necessary for the exchange of goods between one customs territory and another.
What happens at customs?
Goods crossing the European border and coming from third countries are subject to customs operation. This includes the preparation of a detailed declaration, potential and possible physical checks, valuation of the goods and calculation of taxes: taxes, duties, VAT and excise duties. Once this stage is completed, most of the goods are released.
Customs costs are calculated on the basis of several elements:
- Nature of the goods: Each product has its own customs classification that determines the applicable duty rate.
- Goods value: This value, established by customs, includes the price of the goods, transportation costs, and other additional charges.
- Origin of goods: Trade agreements between countries may provide for duty reductions or exemptions based on the origin of the goods.
- Taxes and additional charges: In addition to VAT, duties , taxes, and other specific charges may be applied.
